History of Serve the City

More About Us

A WORD FROM JESUS

“…and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.”
Matthew 12:25b

OUR ACT OF OBEDIENCE

We desire to cooperate with the John 17 prayer of Jesus that we might be perfected in unity that the world will KNOW God sent Jesus and loves them!

OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH

We are a cross denominational coalition of evangelical Christ Followers with the Lausanne Covenant as our common Statement of Faith.

OUR NAME COMES FROM JEREMIAH 29:7 (NASB)

“Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf;  for in its welfare you will have welfare.”

WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER!
We believe God has called us together for this time and this hour.  In John 12:27 Jesus set the example for us when He said: “Now my soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father save Me from this hour?’ But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Thy name.”

As a coalition we have an ever increasing “resource library” for partners to access. We celebrate our unity twice a year at “An Evening of Worship and Prayer.” Our leadership gathers (September to May) at our monthly luncheons for fellowship, prayer, testimonies, vision casting, and of course great food. We co-labor in our prayer, care and share initiatives. We are better together!

WHAT CAN WE DO TOGETHER THAT WE CANNOT DO ALONE?

Because Serve The City is relationally based, we were able to come together to serve our communities of Cedar Rapids and Palo prior to, during and after The Epic Flood of 2008.  The Lord used His sons and daughters to bring a blessing to our neighbors in our 24 days of service.  In 2008 our flood was the 2nd worst flood in America and 3rd worst disaster.  Serve The City responded, staffed and operated the Emergency Volunteer Center…and no one died in our flood.  This one fact was also known across our nation by many including Homeland Security, FEMA and others.

The videos are 5 minutes and 10 minutes in length.  They give you a sample of what God’s people can do when they are obedient to the Word of God and cooperate with The High Priestly Prayer of Jesus as recorded in John 17 where Jesus prayed for those of us who would believe on Him through the word of the disciples.

In one section of that prayer He uttered these words: “that they may all be one…..that they may be perfected in unity so the world may know that You sent Me…..”

Psalm 133 The Lord commands a blessing when His children dwell in unity

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head, Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron’s beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon, Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever.”

There are many examples of answers to this question – our response to the flood is only one the many.
